about
As part of our ongoing collaboration with Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA), we developed a new vision for the kids play area that debuted with the major renovation of the Pittsburgh Intentional Airport that was completed in late 2025. Focusing on the experience of flying and movement, this design considers the specific needs of multi-generational families when they travel – from the young children who need to burn some energy before or after a flight to parents with infants who need some quiet time to grandparents and older siblings who want to join in and play.
Amenities including a a private nursing room, family restroom, wash-up station, dedicated eating area , all located in the same area as interactive art works and gross motor play components. Ample seating is located throughout to allow families to both spread out and keep eyes on their kids.
In addition to a collection of carefully selected furnishing and play equipment, we designed a collection of custom items including a runway rug and scavenger hunt wallpaper, that featuring specific information only found at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Other custom fixtures include Balance See-Saws and Reach, an interactive artwork, from the CMP Tough Art collection.
The design of the space was informed by user-centered research conducted by the airport team as well as Universal Design practices that have become the hallmark of the design collaboration between ACAA and CMP.
