Project Pop Up for the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership

Transforming vacant storefronts into engaging, family-friendly experiences that celebrate art, culture, and storytelling.

about

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh was invited to participate in Project Pop-Up, a program organized by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership that activates vacant storefronts with temporary retail pop-ups, interior window displays, and artistic window graphics. The Museum designed and installed two sets of window displays, including producing original videos.

The concept focused on memorable moments visiting the Children’s Museum campus, past, present and seeing yourself there in the future.  One pair of windows is a twist on the iSpy game, with a mix of photos of current exhibits and artworks found at both Children’s Museum and MuseumLab.  Each window also has artifacts from past exhibits and a video of the galleries from the visitors’ perspective.  The second set of windows is a play on the multilingual ‘Hi Neighbor’ window mural located at the Museum, with the phrases reformatted as speech bubbles. The video display shows a quick film of visitors saying ‘Hi Neighbor’ to passers by.  The entire project provides a dynamic look at what a visit to the Museum feels like and hopefully elicits happy memories, inspiring people to come for visit.
